Motivation for the Reluctant Gardener

Some people just love to go out, get their hands dirty, and start to do some serious work in their gardens. They love planting seeds, adore mowing the lawn, and get downright ecstatic at the thought of laying down fertilizer or pulling weeds. Some of us have a word for these people and it’s “crazy.” It’s a good kind of crazy, of course, especially if you want to have a beautiful lawn and/or garden.

But what about the rest of us who are, shall we say, less enthusiastic. Yes, we want to have a fully green, perfectly manicured lawn and a beautiful garden. But we’ve been working all week and getting us off those super comfortable recliners and bean bags chairs in our living room is, really, next to impossible. It’s just so nice and comfortable being right where we are. Some of us might feel, right about then, like we’d be happy to let the birds, possums, and snails do our gardening for us.

Naturally, if we continue to take this attitude for very long, our lawns are going to be more hellscape than landscapes and the neighborhood association will be knocking at the door. Of course, we could hire a gardener to take care of our lawn, but who can afford a really good one in this economy? Nope. We can’t have our gorgeous cake and eat it too. Like anything else worthwhile, having a beautiful front and back yard requires a little work. So, what to do for those of us to whom gardening seems more like a sentence than a gift? How do we get reluctant gardeners to step away from the oh-so-comfy bean bags and recliners and the oh-so-entertaining flat screen TV?

The solution is to change the way we look at gardening. First of all, we all need more exercise and yard work is actually quite good in that regard. How do you think America’s farmers were able to eat all that traditional butter and lard laden farm food for centuries without becoming enormously overweight?

Also, it might be worth doing a little bit of mental work to try and recast yard labor as something we get to do, not something we have to do. It’s naturally a bit harder to do this if we aren’t enthusiastic gardeners to start with but sometimes a “fake it ’till you make it” approach can actually work. That way, after a couple of hours of work outdoors and a nice shower, we can sit in our bean bags or recliners and watch the brain-sucking reality show of our choice at least having done something productive and healthy. Right?
