Deputy Director and Founder of the National Centre for Biometric Studies

Dr Clive Summerfield is Chief Executive Officer for biometric consulting firm 3SH and Deputy Director and Founder of the National Centre for Biometric Studies at the University of Canberra.

Based in Canberra, Clive is an adviser to Government departments and industry on biometric technologies research, evaluation, commercialisation and deployment.

Clive has over 25 years’ experience in research, and commercial deployment of new technologies in Australia, the UK and the USA.  He is an internationally recognised authority on voice technology and biometrics.  As CEO of 3SH he has spearheaded to adoption of voice biometrics for secure on-services in Government, telecommunications and financial services, including provision of consultancy services relating to Common Criteria certification of biometrics systems.  As Founder and Deputy Director of the National Centre for Biometric Studies (NCBS) at University of Canberra, Clive has provided vendor independent scientific analysis of the performance and effectiveness of biometric technologies, including undertaking the World’s largest and more extensive analysis of voice biometrics for Government applications, an analysis that is currently being used as a foundation for US Government’s “v-Auth” strategy for secure telephone services.

Prior to founding 3SH and NCBS, Clive was founder and CEO of Syrinx Speech Systems, an Australian technology business that during the 1990’s pioneered the development and deployment of voice recognition in contact centres. As CEO of Syrinx, Clive was responsible for delivering the World’s first natural language voice recognition solution for the TAB in Perth (1996), the World’s largest voice recognition system for AT&T Customer Service in the USA (1998) and Australia’s first voice recognition system in financial services for CommSec (2000). During this time Clive grew Syrinx from a zero funded start-up position to a World leader in voice recognition; securing over $25 million in venture capital funds and $3.5 million in R&D grants, employing over 65 staff in Australia and the USA.

Clive has a Bachelor of Science Honours (B.Sc. Hons) in Electrical Electronic Engineering and Diploma of Industrial Studies (DIS) from Loughborough University of Technology in the UK, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Sydney and is Adjunct Professor of Computing at the University of Canberra.  Clive is also Research Associate with US voice industry analyst firm Opus Research Inc.
